Frequently asked questions
How often should I visit the dentist?
The recommended interval between dental visits depends on your individual oral health, age, medical history and risk factors. Some patients may benefit from more frequent appointments, while others may need routine check-ups less often. Your dentist will recommend a suitable recall schedule after assessing your teeth and gums.
Does a dental clean hurt?
A routine dental cleaning is usually comfortable, although you may experience mild sensitivity or tenderness if there is significant plaque build-up, gum inflammation or exposed tooth roots. Please tell the dental team if you feel uncomfortable so they can adjust the treatment where possible.
Are X-rays safe?
Dental X-rays use a low level of radiation and are only recommended when clinically necessary. They help the dentist examine areas that cannot be seen during a normal visual examination. Appropriate safety precautions are used during the procedure.
What causes cavities?
Cavities develop when bacteria in dental plaque use sugars from food and drinks to produce acids that weaken the tooth enamel. Frequent sugary snacks, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth and insufficient fluoride exposure may increase the risk of tooth decay.
Can gum disease be treated?
Yes. The treatment required depends on the stage and severity of the condition. Early gum inflammation may improve with professional cleaning and better daily oral hygiene. More advanced gum disease may require deeper cleaning, ongoing monitoring or referral for additional care.
Is dental treatment painful?
Modern dental treatment is planned with patient comfort in mind. Local anaesthetic may be used to numb the treatment area when necessary. You may feel pressure or movement during certain procedures, but you should not feel sharp pain. Please tell the dentist immediately if you feel uncomfortable
Do you accept medical aid?
Medical aid benefits and claiming arrangements vary between schemes, plans and treatment types. Please bring your medical aid card and membership information to your appointment. Contact your preferred branch before your visit to confirm the current claiming and payment process.
What should I do in a dental emergency?
Contact your nearest branch as soon as possible if you experience severe tooth pain, facial swelling, dental trauma, a broken tooth, uncontrolled bleeding or a knocked-out tooth. Severe swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, major facial trauma or uncontrolled bleeding requires urgent medical attention.
Do children need regular dental check-ups?
Yes. Regular dental visits help monitor tooth eruption, identify early signs of decay and support healthy brushing and eating habits. The dentist will recommend an appropriate appointment schedule based on the child’s age and oral health.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book by contacting your preferred branch directly or by completing the appointment request form on the website. Online requests are not automatically confirmed. A member of the practice team will contact you to confirm the available date and time.
